The relationship between children and their families is reciprocal. A child will
have an impact on the family's quality of life and vice versa. Where professionals
work to improve the quality of family life this, in turn, will benefit the child.
A quality of life scale
There are a number of ways of assessing the quality of family life. A useful scale,
developed in the United States, is the Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale.
This is specifically designed for families of children with disabilities and focuses
on five areas:
Summers, J., Poston, D., Turnbull, A., Marquis, J., Hoffman, L., Mannan,
H. and Wang, M., (2005) Conceptualising and measuring family quality of
life, Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 49 (10) 777-783.
